This academic year the Romani Studies Program at Central European University launched the Advanced Certificate Program in Romani Studies. This new Advanced Certificate Program focuses on giving students a deeper understanding of the complex situation of Roma and the multifaceted challenges that decision makers are facing in designing and implementing equity-minded policies and legislations various sectors.
The launch of the Advanced Certificate is as an important milestone in the institutionalization of Romani Studies Program at CEU. Angela Kocze, RSP Chair says, the development of this Program was one of their most important responsibilities over the past years, and its interdisciplinary approach is what makes it suitable and exciting for a wide range of CEU students:
“I truly believe that the Advanced Certificate Program in Romani Studies is an interdisciplinary field of studies that derives from humanities and social sciences and continues to be in a dialogue with those disciplines. In other words, students can study sociology, history, legal studies or many other fields, and meanwhile they can focus on the very specific issues which relate to Roma. In that way, we are creating dialogues with those disciplinary studies. This work can be constructive and productive and in fact, creative as well.”
The first cohort comprises of eight students who are pursuing their degrees at CEU. As intended, students come from various backgrounds and departments, including Nationalism Studies, History, Sociology, or Political Science.
The program is approved and registered by the New York State Education Department. Students admitted to master’s and doctoral programs at CEU may pursue the certificate.
