Romani Studies Students EURAC Honorable Mention 2025

We are proud to announce that CEU students Sári Szilágyi and Noelia Barbero have received an Honorable Mention in the 2025 Student Minority Projects Challenge, organized by Eurac’s Institute for Minority Rights and the UN Special Representative on Minority Issues.

Their project, Remembering the Porajmos: Mapping Roma Holocaust Memorials Across Europe, was developed as the final assignment for the course “Race, Justice, Solidarity: Addressing Anti-Roma Racism in Contemporary Europe” taught by Dr. Márton Rövid. The project offers a grassroots, transnational mapping and critical analysis of Roma Holocaust memorials in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. It highlights the uneven distribution of memorials, the role of local initiatives, and cross-community collaborations—particularly with Jewish communities.

The jury praised the project for its originality, creativity, and potential impact. It is featured on the website of the Academic Network for Minority Issues and presented at a side event during the UN Forum on Minority Issues in Geneva.

Sári Szilágyi is an MA student in Critical Gender Studies and a participant in the Romani Studies Advanced Certificate Program. Noelia Barbero is pursuing an MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology, also enrolled in the Romani Studies Advanced Certificate Program. Both students bring strong academic and grassroots commitments to justice, memory, and minority rights.

We congratulate Sári and Noelia on this well-deserved recognition and look forward to seeing their work continue to grow and inspire.
