Scholars of CEU’s Romani Studies Program Address Structural Racism and Gendered Oppression at symposium of the Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies
On October 17, 2025, the Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority hosted the international symposium “Discrimination Against the Roma in Central and Eastern Europe: Antigypsyism, Political Underrepresentation, and Memory Politics.” The event brought together leading scholars to examine persistent antigypsyism, legal protections, and historical memory Central European University’s Romani Studies Program was represented by two leading voices:
Angéla Kóczé, Chair of the Romani Studies Program, presented “The Recursion of Eugenic Logic: Problematizing the Gendered Racialization of Roma in Central and Eastern Europe.” Her talk examined how historical eugenic discourses persist in shaping policies and narratives, disproportionately impacting Romani women, and called for intersectional strategies to dismantle these structures.

Márton Rövid, Visiting Professor presented the article “From Tackling Antigypsyism to Remedying Racial Injustice.” Rövid argued that narrow inclusion policies fail to challenge systemic oppression. He urged a shift toward racial justice, grounded in recognition of historical and ongoing harms, reparations, and reconciliation, framing Roma emancipation within global debates on structural racism.
