The online course provides an opportunity for students to examine stereotypes associated with the Roma in literature and film as well as engage with primary resources (poetry, prose, essays, art) produced by Roma authors and drawn from collective forms of Romani art (fairy tales and songs). Students will explore themes of “the other,” identity, class, race, gender, location (and dislocation) and time, and the often overlooked experiences of Romani slavery and the Holocaust, amongst others.
During the Fall term, a diverse student body of different universites have translated and adapted works from Russian, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Uzbek, Burmese and Hungarian languages, works spanning from the mid-19th century to the present. During the course they had a chance to meet with different scholars and speakers to support their research projects. Check the syllabus for more detailed information.
